19 Months!

It's hard to believe Iris is already 19 Months and it's even harder to believe this little sweet face below is already entering the "Terrible Two's" phase.
I say this for many reasons but a prime example is when I went to register Iris at her new preschool this past week where she threw a huge temper tantrum. She sat quietly at the little kids table in the middle of the office and played with the puzzles while I filled out the paperwork. She was behaving like an angel. Then, when I was done, I helped her put the puzzle back together so we did not leave a mess and went to pick her up to leave. When I did, she screamed---and I mean screamed at the top of her lungs. She then grabbed the puzzle and threw it across the office with pieces going everywhere. I say puzzle but this was one of those wooden type puzzles and it was a clock so the pieces were wooden blocks that were quite large. Three women came out of their offices to see what had happened. All I could think to was that I was sorry and she really enjoyed their puzzle. The Head of Admissions then walked out of her office and introduced herself. I had to introduce Iris as she was still crying and flailing around as I was crawling around on my hands and knees picking up puzzle pieces. I was mortified. Iris was happy again now that she had her puzzle back and I spoke to the lady for a minute. Then I warned the lady that I was going to grab Iris and just run out the door because she was going to scream again as soon as I picked her up. Fortunately she was very nice and said she understood. So we did it. I picked up Iris and walked as fast as I could out the door while she screamed and kicked. Thank goodness I had signed the contract and wrote the check before she showed herself. Otherwise, they may have kindly rescinded her spot in next years class.
So as you can see, Iris is a handful. Therefore, instead of writing about milestones Iris has achieved this month, I thought it was a good time to write about lessons I have learned from raising Iris.
Lessons learned:
1. Stickers are hard to remove from hardwood floors, particularly foam stickers.
2. Strawberry Banana V-8 Fusion may have a full serving of vegetables and fruit but those health benefits do not outweigh the labor involved in removing the red stain it produces on a seagrass rug.
3. No matter what the "experts" say never teach your child sign langauge because it's hard enough to say "no" to a cute little face looking up at you saying "more, more" over and over again but once they start also signing the word "more" it's so darn cute you'll give them whatever they want.
4. Do not take a toddlers diaper off and tell them to get in the tub if an inflatable pool full of balls is in close proximity. They will bypass the tub, jump straight into the pool, and pee. Then you will have to wash not only a toddler but also an inflatable pool and 100 plastic balls.
5. In February buy a years supply of the little sweetheart candy boxes. They will get you through an mundane errand that you must do with a toddler in tow.
6. Teaching a toddler how to push the garage door button may be helpful to you when you are carrying them plus and load of groceries but be advised that they will consider this their official "job" and you will never be allowed to touch that button in their presence again. 7. If you are Catholic and your church does not have a nursery like most other churches, just use that hour to quietly pray for your sanity because you will never hear a word the priest says anyway.

Ashton's 6th Birthday

We went to Ashton's 6th birthday party this morning. It was at this little house in Summervile that is solely for childrens birthday parties ands storytime during the week. Every room has a different theme and the kids get to run around the whole house. While the big kids were running around Iris played a little bit of dress up... but her favorite place was this little playhouse. She stayed in here almost the whole party.
Ashton wanted an Incredible Hulk party so here he is in full costume with his birthday cake.
Then it was on to opening presents... as you can see he gets very excited. Iris looked on from her safe spot on the couch so she wouldn't get stepped on by all the big kids and started collecting her favorite thing--"boons."

The Little Gym

Iris recently started classes at The Little Gym. Today she practiced walking on the balance beam. Before this picture was taken she walked across it 5 times perfectly with me holding her waist but as soon as I got the camera out she decided to get lazy and not cooperate. She can actually do it very well... Next we played with some balls...
we were supposed to be throwing them up in the air but Iris preferred to just sit on them...
and then we finished the class with bubbles which I think are everyone's favorite. She did lots of other exercises as well but it's so hard to take pictures when she's constantly on the go and you're trying to help her so she doesn't get hurt. We'll try for some better pictures next week though.

Ash Wednesday

Wednesday was Ash Wednesday and Iris wore her new pretty dress to school. This is technically the 2nd dress I have made for her but it's the first that looked good enough to send her to school in. I think it turned out pretty cute....
Iris received ashes on her forehead at school and they gave her a pretty church filled with foam stickers to decorate..
After naptime she got busy decorating her church. This kept her busy for almost an hour. In fact, she's still playing with it as I write this.

We got Snow!!

We didn't believe the weatherman but it happened....the Lowcountry got snow! We only got about an inch here in Johns Island but Summerville got around 4 inches. Here's a picture of mom and dad's driveway and house...
Brad and I spent the night at Kiawah for Valentines Day/Brad's Birthday so we missed most of the fun. Luckily, Iris was in Summerville at Nana and Papa's so she was able to enjoy the snow...
(I hate to tell them but I don't think this sled is going anywhere.)
Iris helped the family make a snow man... and got a closer inspection of the white frosty stuff...

Pirate Party

Iris' friend Tyler had a Pirate Birthday Party at the Lowcountry Children's Museum Saturday evening. It was after hours so the kids had the whole museum to themselves. Iris took that opportunity to shop for limes and an eggplant without having to fight for a grocery cart... Then she had a big feast complete with pirate treasure....
Daddy even attended the festivities. It was his first childrens birthday party--YEAH DADDY!!!

Mommy's new hobby

Brad bought me an embroidery machine for Christmas and this is one of my first projects. A little heart applique shirt with her initial in the middle. I turned out pretty good. I also made a hairbow and cut a pair of her jeans and added matching ruffles to them. They look more like bell bottoms than ruffles but they were still pretty cute.

Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs!

As most of our blogger readers know, Brad is on a race car team. Each car has to have a theme and since their car is Italian and one of the teammates owns an Italian restaurant here in Charleston they decided to go with an Italian theme and named the car "Fasta Pasta." Before the race the cars are judged based on creativity and presentation. This year they decorated the car and cooked spaghetti to serve to the judges. Iris was also supposed to be there for the judging dressed in her version of an Italian car and dressed like spaghetti ands meatballs. Kind of like a little "mascot" for the team. I drove up on Friday morning and got her to Camden about 20 minutes before judging began----and right about the time Fasta Pasta died. It was also POURING down rain so Iris and I sat in the camper for several hours while they tried to work on the car but unfortunately it was never resurrected. Poor Iris never got to show the judges her car or costume but since I worked so hard on it I had to take some pictures and post them on the blog. The car actually had more pasta noodles, a fork stuck in the meatball on the hood and Iris was to be holding a big green can of grated parmesean cheese and a wooden spoon but
we just took these photos in the driveway when we got home and I was so over the whole event that I didn't bother with all the finishing touches--sorry.
